Ankla is not your average, gnarly hardcore metal; it is a blast of energy, a fusion of Latin sounds and heavy-metal elements. Many of the songs off of here follow the same pattern, and it becomes predictable after the first song.
Overall, in spite of some traiils faults, with Steep TrailsAnkla builds a solid foundation for a new direction of Latin metal and delivers a disc that would satisfy even the most critical of change-resistant metal fans. The biggest problem with Ankla is their vocalist, Ikaro Stafford. Adding to the polished, yet primal effect are lead singer Ikaro Stafford Traios vocals, kicking in with a throaty grit that still allows the listener to understand most of what he's saying.
This expanded edition from Cherry Ankoa Records makes the case for hearing it free of the baggage of that alt rock era. Some experiments work whereas others fail. The disc's intro, "Sinking", pulls together the best elements of Ankla and gives the listener a good five across the eyes, er… ears, rather. As multi-layered as its founder's guitar style may be, Ankla pushes the envelope even further by including not traile, but two percussionists in its lineup.
On their debut effort, Steep TrailsAnkla charts new territory, blending heavy, thrash-metal with traditional Latin music tails ways that even the most elitist of metal-heads would enjoy. On songs such as "Seasons Never Change" and "Deceit", the guitarist demonstrates both his range and proficiency.
His footwork is impressive, and he never takes a rest.
